Did you use boning in your corset? If so what kind of boning do you think would be most affordable and effective?

You are a bloody life saver. I'm cosplaying Elsa and need it done in six weeks, so I didn't have time to wait for a pattern to arrive. Then I found this, and you may well have saved my entire outfit from being a empire dress. Thank you!

If your bust length and hip length are different, would you end up with a trapezoid shape in the beginning, before you divide it into the number of panels you want? or would you go with either the hip or bust length, but not both?

go with whatever is the largest.  then you'll divide the panels with in that for the rest

Would this work for an underbust corset as well?

Yes it would. You would just have to adjust the length but the construction will be the same

In step 3 which one do you divide by 5, the bust or hip measurement? and where does all the extra space come from?
Reply
:iconkellaxproductions:
KellaxProductions Featured By Owner Aug 6, 2012  Student
first i divide the bust and hip by five and connect them with straight lines as you see in the 3rd step (my bust and hips were the same measurement.) if they aren't i suggest taking your biggest measurement (either your bust or hip) and dividing it by five and drawing straight lines down like step 3. then in step 5 i divide the remaining measurements by five as well. these measurements should be much smaller than your bust or hips and thats where all the space comes from in the pattern. and follow the instruction on placement of the smaller measurements as shown in step 5. does that clarify?

My bust is 36in and my hips are 32in, wouldnt there be a considerable overlap on the hip if I used the bigger measurement?
In step 3 I still don't get where all the extra space on the end comes from, there are 5 panels and then an extra one on the end thats not needed, how much do I take off the end?

ok i now see exactly what you mean by the 'extra space' this was just extra paper that i didn't know if i would need when drafting out the pattern. i just drew the horizontal lines really long and then measured them the correct length later. thats where the 'extra space' is from. ignore it.
and as for the first question. im not saying to replace your hip measurement with the larger one. im saying draw the vertical lines down in 5 equal parts from your biggest measurement. being your bust. then when you are ready to draw your hips, divide the measurement into 5 and space them out in vertical sections. your hip measurements will be smaller than the sections because your hips are smaller than your bust.
that clarify a bit better?

Very nice! I've been interested in making my own corset pattern, possibly, for my next corset.
I *do* have a pattern that's for making victorian corsets, but I maybe wanted to try making one for myself.
So, my little question, you could alter the top and bottom to give a different style to the corset, right?

:iconkellaxproductions:
KellaxProductions Featured By Owner Jul 18, 2012  Student
yup. very easily. this is just a very simple and straight forward pattern. once you have the initial shape and measurements you can alter the bottom or top.
